The Hawks welcome the Dockers back to Melbourne following a remarkable 2026 finals series in which Hawthorn upset Fremantle in Perth, before the Dockers recovered to reach the AFL Grand Final.
Hawks and Dockers Revisit Their Dramatic 2026 Finals Rivalry
Hawthorn and Fremantle share a significant chapter of AFL finals history, having contested the 2013 Grand Final at the MCG. On that occasion, Hawthorn defeated Fremantle by 15 points to secure its 11th VFL/AFL premiership, beginning a remarkable run of three consecutive flags.
The clubs met again in the 2015 preliminary final, with the Hawks winning by 27 points in Perth before going on to claim another premiership. Their rivalry gained renewed intensity during the 2026 season.
In Round 9, Fremantle staged a thrilling comeback against Hawthorn at Optus Stadium. Trailing by 19 points midway through the final quarter, the Dockers kicked the final five goals to claim a 12.16 (88) to 11.7 (73) victory by 15 points.
Jack Gunston had threatened to win the match for Hawthorn with six goals, but Fremantle’s late surge secured its eighth consecutive victory. The clubs met again in September, this time in a qualifying final at Optus Stadium.
Despite Fremantle finishing the home-and-away season as minor premiers, Hawthorn produced one of the biggest upsets of the finals series. The Hawks dominated the contest to win 10.12 (72) to 5.10 (40) by 32 points, securing a home preliminary final and sending the Dockers into a more difficult path through September.
Fremantle recovered to reach the 2026 Grand Final, where Brisbane defeated the Dockers by seven points in front of more than 100,000 spectators at the MCG. Hawthorn also reached the preliminary final before falling to Brisbane by nine points in a high-scoring contest.
The 2027 meeting offers Fremantle an opportunity to respond to that qualifying final defeat, while Hawthorn will be looking to reinforce its recent finals success against the Dockers.
