Geelong appeared to have snatched victory when Shannon Neale put the Cats six points ahead with just 90 seconds remaining. Mitch Lewis then levelled the scores before veteran Hawk Jack Gunston struck the post for the match-winning behind in the final seconds.
The one-point result was a reminder of why this fixture has become a highlight of the AFL calendar. Hawthorn will be hoping to repeat that performance in 2027, while Geelong will be determined to reverse the result.
