What followed was one of the most extraordinary finishes in AFL history.
Brisbane kicked four unanswered goals to snatch a seven-point victory, 14.12 (96) to 12.17 (89), in front of 100,023 spectators. The result delivered the Lions a third consecutive premiership and left Fremantle wondering what might have been.
Despite the defeat, Fremantle’s Shai Bolton was awarded the Norm Smith Medal for best afield, becoming the first player from a losing Grand Final side to receive the honour since 2005.
Now, six months later, the Dockers return to the same ground for the first time, this time facing Collingwood under Thursday night lights.
There is another intriguing storyline between these clubs. Fremantle has enjoyed the better of their recent encounters, including a six-point victory at Adelaide Oval in 2026 and a one-point win at the MCG in 2025.
Their three meetings from 2024 to 2026 were decided by a combined total of just 15 points.
For Collingwood, this is an opportunity to reverse that recent trend. For Fremantle, it is a chance to replace painful MCG memories with a statement victory early in the 2027 season.
