Important information about AFL Finals Week 1 at the MCG
At this stage, AFL Finals Week 1 matchups, venues and scheduling have not been confirmed. Finals fixtures are determined by the final ladder positions at the conclusion of the home and away season, with the AFL confirming venues and dates shortly after Round 24.
AFL Finals Week 1 is expected to be played between Thursday 3rd September and Sunday 6th September 2026, based on the 2026 AFL Grand Final scheduled for Saturday 26th September 2026.
How MCG finals are determined in Week 1
Whether zero, one, two or even three finals are played at the MCG in Week 1 depends entirely on the makeup of the top eight teams and which clubs earn the right to host finals.
Here are some realistic scenarios:
Scenario 1 – No Finals at the MCG
If the top four teams are interstate clubs (for example Brisbane, Sydney, Fremantle and Adelaide), and lower ranked Victorian teams either do not qualify or are drawn to play away, it is possible that no Week 1 finals are played at the MCG. In this scenario, finals may be hosted at interstate venues or at other Victorian grounds.
Scenario 2 – One Final at the MCG
If only one Victorian club earns a home final and is scheduled to play at the MCG, there may be a single Week 1 final at the venue. This is common when one Melbourne based club finishes in the top four or secures a qualifying or elimination final.
Scenario 3 – Two or Three Finals at the MCG
If multiple Melbourne based clubs earn home finals, particularly if Collingwood, Melbourne, Richmond, Carlton, Hawthorn or Essendon finish high on the ladder, the MCG may host two or even three finals across the opening weekend. This typically includes a mix of Qualifying Finals and Elimination Finals.
